A few things to think about if your child
has or will have a cell phone
1. Start simple by explaining all the features of the phone, especially the emergency and safety features.
2. Teach them about responsibility by explaining all the fees that are associated with a phone including ring tones and games as well as texting.
3. Limit usage by giving certain times that the phone goes off like meals, homework time and any other family times.
4. Talk about keeping the cell phone number somewhat private and not giving it to people online or over facebook or other social sites. Also remind kids not to answer texts or calls from numbers they do not know.
5. Some families do not allow kids to use their cell phones at home. Only landlines are used when the kids are home which helps parents as well as kids.
6. Talk about downloading and putting unnecessary things on the phone. Making kids pay some part of their cell phone bill can make a huge statement in responsibility.
Get your child a phone when YOU decide not when their friends have them or you feel pressure from other moms and kids. Each parent knows when it is right for their child!
